Government of Canada

The Government of Canada is invested in the success of its financial management professionals. The Financial Officer Recruitment and Development (FORD) program is a development program for entry-level financial professionals. Individuals in the program are supported to obtain their chartered professional accountant (CPA) designation. The 30-month program provides rotational work assignments, formal training, mentoring and professional development sessions.

STUDENTS WITH PUBLIC SERVICE EXPERIENCE

As a student working in a finance role for the public service you may be eligible to participate in the FORD program if you are:

  • interested in joining the public service
  • interested in taking part in the FORD program (pursuing the CPA designation)
  • graduating within the next year
  • meeting the GPA requirements of the program

During your student employment, discuss with your manager your interest in pursuing a career with the public service and interest in participating in the FORD program. Your manager must complete a student assessment and support you during the enrollment process. The Financial Management Community Development team will guide your manager through this process.

If the department or agency you are currently working for does not have a permanent position available for you, our team can help refer your file to other hiring managers. Your manager will still have to complete a student assessment.

GRADUATES WITH NO PUBLIC SERVICE EXPERIENCE

Recent graduates interested in a career with the public service can get started by following the application process. Once you are hired, you may be eligible to participate in the FORD program if you are:

  • working in a financial management role
  • a permanent (i.e., indeterminate) employee with the public service

If you are interested in pursuing your CPA designation, discuss with your manager that you would like to participate in the FORD program. There is an internal process for current employees and there are specific enrollment requirements. The Financial Management Community Development team will guide your manager through this process.
